Poking around on YouTube.com, I found the below videos of Prince and his former wife Mayte in an interview with Oprah sometime around 1996, when his Emancipation CD was out.
They talk about meeting way back in 1990 when Mayte was only 16 years old. I’ve listened to parts of that CD over and over, so I know the lyrics and what he was feeling at the time.
It’s heart-wrenching to know how their story would turn from such hope to the devastating loss of their son Gregory shortly after birth. Perhaps that’s why Prince didn’t do many more interviews after that Oprah one. I only remember seeing Prince on Tavis Smiley’s show in recent years.
