No Zhu Zhu Pets Recall – But Walmart Not Allowed to Sell Some Zhu Zhu Pets Stock

I was surprised to see someone searching for “Zhu Zhu Pets recall” and they landed on one of my posts about the Zhu Zhu Pets, which a woman just commented on that her local WalMart wasn’t allowed to sell her the Zhu Zhu pets toys till Black Friday or something.

But I found this article, which says the Zhu Zhu Pets have not been recalled.

I don’t know where that rumor started.

But it did say they are holding the Zhu Zhu Pets and not going to sell them to customers until perhaps Sunday, November 8, 2009.

Not sure what’s true — so leave a comment with your experiences at buying Zhu Zhu Pets from your local WalMart stores so we can learn the truth.

Thanks!

Went at 12:10 am on 11/08 and was told ’sorry all sold out already we had only 5 although our stock tickets say we have 16, but well we cant find them.” So I ask them to check another local store to see if they had any, and after finally convincing them to check for me I was told that store didnt receive any to sell for the 11/08 release.

The whole ‘block sale’ ‘big release’ was a marketing ploy and nothing but CRAP!

I went to my local Wal-Mart today at noon and they were already all sold out of Zhu Zhu Pets this morning, they said.

Rachie  on November 9th, 2009

I just talked to someone at wal-mart tonight to see if they had any she said they started coming up not for sale a couple days ago and they had to pull them of the shelf because they were recalled, It is all a big scam

barbie  on November 10th, 2009

Wal-mart scammed consumers once again, by providing a limited supply of Zhu zhu pets. I went to two wal-marts on 11/08 and expected to see at least a large empty display, but there was one small empty hanger that could have contained maybe 10 toys. This is false advertising. An associate told me Wal-mart had 4,000 toys on order and only received 40 from the mfr. that week. I think wal-mart could have provided an addendum and apology with its ad. Screw zhu zhu pets, I will not be at the mercy of foreign mfr’s and wal-mart that supports them!! What happened to wal-mart, buy something American instead!

This is greaat toys, my baby very love it

zhuzhucrazy  on November 10th, 2009

I know for a fact that Walmart stores did not get them at all & have not gotten them for over 2 weeks. As for Nov 8, no store in the south-east Market got them, As many of you may have noticed On the big Nov. 8 ad it said roll back to $8 from $11.99. from Nov 8-24. Walmart has never sold them for $11.99, The true definition of Rollback mean that after the adv Rollback dates they are jacking the price to 11.99 so do not expect to see any until black Friday! They are holding them and will not release them until then! They are not the biggest & richest company in the world for nothing these s.o.b.’s know what there doing when it comes to making money! If any Manger or Co-manager tells you they sold out! they are lying in your face, they never even got them!

I went to Walmart in Salem NH last night, 11/13/09, and was told they did not have any zhu zhu pets as they had been recalled.

memann  on November 15th, 2009

I was at WalMart this morning and saw a tag hung up where Zhu Zhu pets are suppose to go and it said “RECALLED.” I imagine either they ARE recalled (but nothing is posted on the zhu zhu pet site) or this is there way to ensure an unsupervised stock boy doesn’t put any out.

dana  on November 16th, 2009

And I know for a fact that the WalMart in Seekonk, MA had 10 in stock on Thursday, November 5th, held them for the sale, and did sell all 10 on Sunday, November 8th, when the sale started. None there since, and according to the toy dept manager, there has been NO RECALL on them at all.

BOOMCKEEVER  on November 16th, 2009

On 11/15/09 I was told by a Walmart employee (Hudson, NY) that Walmart stores are not allowed to release any Zhu Zhu pets or accessories until Black Friday. In the spots where the pets & accessories are located there are signs “Limit 2 Per Customer.”

Karikruse  on November 17th, 2009

I was at wal-mart last week, and there were 5 zhu zhu pets on the shelf. I didn’t know much about them, but I had heard they were hard to find so I put 3 in my cart for my kids. When I went to pay, the checker rang them up and the monitor said sale not permitted or something, and then she said they must be recalled, and would not let me buy them.

dana  on November 19th, 2009

Just a follow-up on my previous comment…….Still no hamsters at the WalMart in Seekonk, MA, but I did see the same sign as BOOMCKEEVER(above), in the spot where the pets are located, stating “Limit 2 Per Customer” at the WalMart in Fall River, MA. Still HAVE NOT heard of a recall from no one anywhere. I believe the stores are holding them, or will get them for Black Friday.

MD MOMMY  on November 21st, 2009

I went to my Walmart in MD several weeks ago. I was told they had “a bunch” but could not sell them until Black Friday. The toy department head told me they would not scan at the register, which means…do not display until Black Friday.

My daughter got a Go Go Pet for her 3rd birthday back in August…..neat toy…but it should be recalled and I would not be surprised if they do!!! She got her hair tangled in the gears twice. It talks and makes noises…so she lifted it to her ear so she could hear it…it turned on and her hair got tangled up in the gears on the bottom. It was so tight I had to cut a clump of her hair off to get it out. She is not allowed to play with it anymore!!!

dana  on November 23rd, 2009

ToysRus in both Swansea, MA and N.Dartmouth, MA had hamsters Saturday morning. Both stores opened at 6am, and had hamsters until about 8am. 1 hamster per family. NO RECALL AT ALL!

PIZZT  on December 1st, 2009

THEY OUGHT TO BE RECALLED–OPENED MINE TO PUT IN BATTERIES AND MADE SURE IT WAS WORKING–THE TOY WAS SOON HOT TO THE TOUCH AND STARTED TO MALFUNCTION AND COULD NEVER GET IT TO MOVE LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO–DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BUY SOMETHING ELSE THESE ARE CRAP

BOOMCKEEVER  on December 2nd, 2009

I called Walmart – there is no recall. They receive only a limited amount at a time by the company who makes them (Cepia). Either Cepia cannot keep up with the demand or it’s just some ploy. Funny, you cannot order them directly through the company – ? Target, Toys R Us & Walmart carry them but who knows when they put them on the shelves. Forget Amazon – RIDICULOUS prices!!! Craigslist has a bunch http://www.craigslist.org – but these are the people that bought every last one at 12:02AM in Toys R Us on Black Friday (so much for the 2 per person limit). Prices for the hamsters run $30-$40. That’s triple the amount they originally sold for. But if you want it that bad – that’s another route… Still looking myself : ) Piece by piece it’s coming together!! Good luck everyone!

Ley this be known. To Barbie up a few posts. Its not Wal-marts fault they have limited supply of zhu zhu pets. And its not just some foreign company making them. They are actually made right here in the U.S. Ohio as a matter of fact. And its being made by a SMALL family that invented the stuff and i dont think they knew it was gonna be such a big hit. They are doing all they can do but from what i hear it will be next year before more are released.

i mannaged to complete a whole set including all 4 hampsters by going to target every morning at opening time, they dont hold back the item, they are on the shelves with a limit of 4 hampsters per customer and no limit on accessories, this ordeal took 6 weeks as supplies last about 5 minutes on the shelves but was worth the effort as my grandaughter will get her christmas wish. good luck to all but forget wal-mart and go to target

navywife  on December 6th, 2009

I started looking for this toy back in August when my daughter saw a commercial for them. They werent even on the market back then. At the end of october sometime near halloween i decided to try and get a jump on the xmas rush, something told me this would be a hott toy… I went into the store and there was a large display area for where hte toys should be… There were several of the accessories. I was able to get almot all of the accessories that day. The only thing i didnt have was the hampster, and neither did htey. I had seen the warning about them not selling the toy until nov 8th, so i asked customer service if i was allowed to buy waht they had. She rang the items up and even called a manger over to make sure everythign was ok. They told me their system wasnt showing anything about not selling them so i baught waht i could. I did get my hands on a hampster from a family member on the east coast, I am on the west coast. So idk about a conspiracy i think it seems to me that its more a supply and demand issue. The zhu zhu pets company i dont think knew how hott this toy would be. i am pretty sure htey just cannot supply as many as the product as the companies are ordering. Walmart is not the only carrier and seems to me that if u hit it just right you may just get lucky… good luck to all who still need or want parts of the system.

I work at wal-mart as a dept. manager, and getting in zhu-zhu pets is the most difficult thing right now. my boyfriend is the toys dept manager and he places orders for zhu-zhu pets everyday for large amounts but we only ever get in 15-20 at a time( and we usually have people lined up at midnight for them). its very frustrating. it’s not the actual people working at walmart or the store themselves it’s the warehouses. they are screwing the stores/customers big time

Re 5.2 rating by GoodGuide on the Zhu Zhu Pet. Antimony compounds are used as fire retardants, Tin is also mentioned as being bad. Tin is used in solder. Also on the list of INVESTIGATED things is PVC(chlorine)which when burned gives off HCL (hydrogen chloride) NOT CHLORINE. This is the same thing as the acid in your stomach and is only bad at large concentrations mixed with your body moisture. Chlorine is also in plastic food wrap. PVC is also called “vinyl”–you may have a lot of that around too.
LETS NOT PANIC YET.

just think it’s funny that so many people commenting on here make it sound like walmart owns the rights to these zhu zhu things. f.y.i. they ARE sold in other stores. big thanks to those posting here who mentioned that these toys are also sold out/understocked at OTHER stores. black friday sales and toy shortages due to popularity must not only be happening at stores that people love to hate. merry christmas to you all.

lexibender  on December 7th, 2009

there never was a recall on zhu zhu pets. i work at walmart. the walmart i work wasnt going to sell them unil black friday because they are so popular.

lexibender  on December 7th, 2009

my mom told me the other day that she went to cvs and there were tons of zhu zhu pets there. she asked about them and the cashier said they had been there for days. look at other places. there could be other cvs stores like that.

mls  on December 7th, 2009

Zhu Zhu pets are sold at ToysRUs, Walmart, Target and CVS(limited stores) The manufacturer is having a hard time keeping up with demand. Funny that these same pets were sold last year as Go-Go pets and weren’t as popular. Many stores have to place limits due to extreme popularity. Trying to let everyone get a pet, instead of just the folks selling them on ebay. Also many retailers have to hold them due to advertising coming up. The employees aren’t lying to you when they say the store doesn’t have them – they aren’t told by mgmt for a reason.

Was told by a toys r us associate that Mr. Squiggles, the brown one, was recalled. I later read online that none have been recalled but there are claims that Mr. Squiggles may be toxic. Not sure who to believe. I bought two of them and still searching for a third but I won’t be buying the brown one just in case.

Mommabear05  on December 7th, 2009

There is no recall! Saturday 12/4 the internet was a buzz because a group tested and claimed the toy was toxic. Yet links to purchase Mr Squiggles were on THEIR site. Within 5 hours of their report, Cepia, the company that makes them issued a response. On 12/5 Cepia also showed their papers about passing safety standards. CPSC is NOW involved and they are investigating. The truth will be told in the next couple weeks.

Bought two that were held for me at a local Wal-mart. First plenty of both accessories and rats, then my daughter got interested in them just as they started getting scarce. Then plenty of accessories but no rats. Then I couldn’t find the accessories. Now there may or may not be a potential problem. No toy is worth putting her health at risk reguardless of the amount of toxins. I guess there gonna be 2 more rats on ebay.

Just found Zhu Zhu pets in my local Walmart but when I went to check out they could not sell them to me due to a recall .. when I explained that there was no recall the cashier informed me that they are out of their system ? what’s going on Walmart ?

Helen  on December 15th, 2009

I had 4 pets and 2 accessories in my buggy onNnovember 2, 2009. The 4 pets scanned and “Cannot Sell Item”. I was told – #1. They might be on recall and #2. They where holding the stock for a “Secret Sale”. I spoke with the regional or district manager and he said the sale would start on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7 or 8 a.m. My son went to a store in another city and still was not able to buy them. My husband checked in a 3rd location, Iuka, MS and they had 12 and the ]lady in the toy department there said he could but all of them if he wanted to. Again they rang up as “Cannot sell item”. The employees there had no idea what was wrong. They didn’t know about the “Secret Sale”. The manager from the store I was in on Monday night called me to tell me the employee putting out the stock messed up. I told him that the employee didn’t mess up because it had happened in 3 different locations in the state of Mississippi. I also told him not to blame the employees with the problem that it all started in Bentonville, Ark. I contacted the BBB and got a reply the end of last week. The store manager in Tupelo, MS wrote that I would not listen to reason and that they could not do anything to make me happy, blah, blah, blah. Howard Brannon is his name and he LIED!!! I requested for them to hold the pets for me until I checked on the recall and he said that was against store policy. That would have made me happy. I also told him that any other retail business would have sold them to me that night and learned from their mistake. I was able to get the accessories. None of this makes any sense to me. I do not understand that an $8.00 rat can cause this much of a problem. Anyway my son and his wife went back to the Wal Mart in Starkville, MS just a few minutes before midnight on Saturday, November 7. There were other people there to get some pets two. The first couple had 2 each. My son said he thought the lady was going to go over the checkout counter when the cashier told them they could only get two. She said NO I am getting two and he is getting two – because the limit is two per transaction. So my daughter in law got two and used her debit card. My son was right behind her and he used his debit card (the same account) and it was declined. So he switched to a credit card and he got two. In the meantime, he called to tell me about the situation in Starkville. So at 12:45 my husband and I got out of bed and dressed and were at WalMart in New Albany, MS by 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 8. I asked when we entered where the Zhu Zhu pets were and was told they were locked up in the back of the store. The employee then talked to a man via walkie talky and told him some customers were coming to get some of the pets. She then told us we could only get two. On the way back to the locked office, I approached two other shoppers, whom I did not know, and asked them if they would do me a favor. I told them I would give them the money if they would purchase the pets for me. They agreed. So with help from these two people, my husband and I went home with 8 pets. I think I will hold them until after Christmas and then return them because Howard Brannon told the BBB that they could not sell them because of the recall. Strange to me, that I couldn’t purchase them on Monday but at midnight on the following Saturday I, along with my son and his wife got 12 of these “recalled” pets. Wonder what we will do when WalMart decides they CANNOT SELL Meds, food items, etc, because an ad brochure is coming out in a few days and they want to be sure they have plenty of stock or they decide to hold another “secret sale” and for that reason, they cann’t inform their employees to hold stock because then it wouldn’t be a SECRET!!! Right now my next move is to take all correspondence about this incident to my local newspaper. Won’t that be a hoot? I wonder if WalMart is so powerful that the newspaper will refuse to print this story?

Helen  on December 15th, 2009

After reading some more of the post – I want to defend myself. I would love to shop at Target or any other business over WalMart. This is not the first time I have had trouble. I needed to buy some 2 liter sprites for a wedding reception and our local manager would not let me have but six. I was using an ad match at 6 am on a Saturday morning and he said I could not deplete his stock. He said other customers coming in later in the day might need some also. I told him I thought it was first come first serve and I also asked him if I were not using com ads if I could buy as many as I needed? I didn’t get an answer. He did tell me that I was not buying for normal use because I was doing this for a wedding reception!!! Go figure this reasoning. Be sure you get all the groceries you need before you plan a dinner party. You might have to go in and out several times before you get what you need. Please allow extra time when you do shop for this reason. It doesn’t matter how inconvenienced you are. They are there to make money – not to assist you. Think about this.

I have been watching our walmart here for the zhu zhu pets (for the past almost 2 weeks). I finally found the spot where they were supposed to stock them up at and then yesterday when i went back that tag was gone and all that was still there was for the accessories. I asked a guy (he looked like a manager) where the tag went and when we were getting some in and he told me “we’re not going to be getting any zhu zhu pets in, we cancelled our order because they were recalled”. I said “so i shouldn’t bother watching here for them” and he told me no! I called a short time later and asked to speak with a manager and then I asked him about it, he said “yes we are getting some in we just aren’t sure when they will arrive”. I told him he needed to talk to the guy by the toys because he obviously gave me false information!!!!! Oh and when I asked when they cancelled their order for walmart, he told me earlier in the week! But like 4 days prior the lady manager I spoke with told me they were getting a shipment in by the 12th. Well not sure what happened there because we NEVER received any. However, today I did finally get ahold of the car/ garage so thats a start (haha) now I just gotta get ahold of a couple of the zhu zhus for my kids.

Forget Walmart. I purchased the bulk of the attachments at CVS. I was able to purchase 2 hamsters at Toys R Us (so much for the one per customer deal). Toys R Us had a lot of hamsters by the way. And the fun house I purchased at Target. I visit my Walmart -minimum 2x/week and I haven’t seen even a $5 bed for these hamsters. Check your other stores, I wouldn’t rely on Walmart if you really want to purchse these for Christmas.

ZHU ZHU PETS Shipment received by my local Wal-Mart (Porter Ranch, CA) last night. I believe this is the case with All Wal-Mart locations. I arrived at 7:30 PST and was the 15th buyer of the Zhu Zhu Pets. No Lines and No Waiting, but Limit 1 Per Customer. When I arrived all accessories were sold out.

I bought 2 Zhu Zhu pets from eToys.com and I don’t understand why they are charging me sales tax on the shipping and handling. I e-mailed them and they told me they were right. I still say their not. Now that i heard about this -maybe recall, i am sorry i got them at all.

liz  on December 25th, 2009

I bought two of the zhu zhu pets, and dont see what the big deal is.All it does is roll around on the floor, and when it was put in the ball it wouldn’t stay upright it kept rowling on it’s side and would just lay there.NO fun at all.I bought these at wal-mart just a few days before Christmas and only four people were in line, there were plenty of them for eight dollars each.

katiebuglj  on December 27th, 2009

I too don’t know what the hype about these things is…My daughter AND step-son both got their hair caught in it and so…we threw ours out on CHRISTMAS day. These things are terrible. There is nothing special about them. I think the real thing is a heck of a lot easier than this death toy.

carrie1218  on December 29th, 2009

It is not that Walmart held anything back, NONE of the stores were stocked… The company Cepia even released a statement that they did not manufacture enough for the high demand, they did not think thier toy would be the hottest thing this year. They are not a very large company and could not, even if they wanted to, keep the stores stocked during this holiday season with limited resources to produce them for the demand that is out there. There is no conspiracy on Walmarts part, that is just silly… By the way, getting your hair caught in something does not make it a “death” toy, another silly statement… My kids have them and they are both girls with long hair, I just advised them to keep thier hair away from the wheel when they turn it on, and they have had lots of fun with thiers!! That would be the same rule with any toy with a mechanical wheel…
