Hot Tools curling irons: Clipless, cermamic and flipperless, who even knew these existed?

Hot Tools curling irons: Clipless, flipperless curling irons: Who even knew these existed?

Nano Tapered Iron

I bought this flipperless Nano Tapered Curling Iron by Hot Tools from the Ulta Beauty store in my area that they recently opened, one that replaced a movie theater — a store that is no doubt stealing plenty of business from the Sally Beauty Supply store in the same strip mall.

I came out with about a $160 haul (I love make up and perfume, too…) and my first flipperless curing iron to play with at home. Granted, I didn’t realize it was a flipperless curing iron when I bought it — one without that clip that lets us put our hair in between the plates like a flat iron, and I’m glad I didn’t know.

Because now the tapered curling iron is one of my favorites that I use more than others.

I love the tapered small barrel, and the ceramic non-burning smell of the Hot Tools curing iron

The criteria I searched for in Ulta was for a curling iron that was definitely ceramic and not made out of the material that leaves your hair smelling like it’s been cooked in an oven.

Small pretty curls produced by the Hot Tools curling iron that's flipperless and tapered and clipless

And the main thing I also wanted was a curling iron that had the smallest barrel possible, and the flipperless “for a single wrap curl” iron fit the bill — as you can see from the pic of me on the left, it produces the spiral, straw-like little curls that last for days till I wash them out.

By day two they are more loose and wavy on my human hair weave hair, but they are still there.

Like I said, I didn’t know the Hot Tools curling iron was flipperless when I bought it, but I like it now because it stays pretty hot and produces curls that are tight and stay for a while.

The “NanoCeramic ultra smooth surface for frizz-free styles” doesn’t leave my hair smelling bad, and they even include a black glove to protect your hand that you’re wrapping the tapered curls around from being burned.

But I don’t even use the glove anymore — it’s made out of a velcro-like material that I find easier to just do without.

The description one one says “Medium 1″ – 1/2″ NanoCeramic® barrel,” but I thought mine was smaller than that. It might be. The tapered tip allows me to curl the roots of my soft and nappy natural hair plus the human hair weave hair I love all at once.

Hot Tools Curling Iron works well on the human hair weave…

…and takes me for-freaking-ever to do a bunch of little curls all over the human hair that I have been putting in — but I like the effect so it’s worth it.

I don’t like the fake hair that I had been wearing. (Ever since I saw Chris Rock’s “Good Hair” movie I felt guilty and stopped buying real hair for a time.)

That “the hair that Brandy wears” doesn’t curl as well as the human hair that’s black and blonde that I’m loving, the same one that responds well to this curling iron.

Good handle, good cord, good heat

Who's that curl?

Yeah, the handle is good, with the rotating swivel cord to help prevent tangles.

I do miss the little clip that would let me hang the thing on my opened drawer as I curled, but that’s what flipperless curling irons like this one do without.

Thre’s a “rheostat control to adjust temperature” that I keep all the way high on ten, and the foldaway safety stand so you don’t have to lay it on the covers like I do and snatch it up when you see it darkening your comforter.

Nice “on” light, and I see they say it has a cool tip, which is probably why I go gloveless, but I have gotten hot fingers.

The separate on/off switch is great, so you can see when it’s on and don’t have to worry about twisting the temp down to turn off. I have, a few times, accidentally turned it off when I didn’t mean to.

But overall, it’s great. The only reason I would go back to my other “with the flipper” ceramic curling iron other than this Hot Tools one is to get the straightening effect, when I use those like a flat iron to stretch and pull and straighten the hair whilst I curl.

Other than that, most weeks find me twisting my hair close to my weave-covered scalp around the tapered flipperless curling iron, and resting it on my weave to let the heat set the curl and keep the heat off my face.

I see Hot Tools has other clipless curling irons on Ulta, but I haven’t tried these yet:

19mm (3/4″) Round Clipless Curling Iron

The 19mm Round is Enzo Milano’s version of your classic 3/4 inch barrel.
